A U. S. District Court judge has ruled that a federal health care agency may not dispense Viagra to a man who has been prescribed it for erectile dysfunction, because of the potential risk it poses to a patient.
The judge in San Diego ruled on Friday that an FDA drugstore has sold Viagra and other drugs for as long as two years after the Food and Drug Administration approved it in 1998.
Viagra is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps to achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra is also known by the brand name Revatio.
“The problem is not the FDA’s decision,” said Dr. Alan Schondelmeyer, director of the U. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which tracks drug products. “It’s the FDA’s decision, and it’s not a decision to dispense any drug.”
The FDA issued a warning in 1998 about a possible increased risk of heart disease and strokes in men taking the drug. The agency also said it was concerned about side effects of the drug and the potential for an increased risk of cardiovascular events in men taking it.
Schondelmeyer said he was concerned about the potential for drug interactions between Viagra and other drugs. He said the FDA is not reviewing the risks of Viagra, but has not made any announcement about the possible risks.
In its ruling, the court said the agency has not evaluated the potential risk of Viagra sales for erectile dysfunction patients. It said the drug is a prescription drug and the company has no intention of selling it for more than six months, when the FDA has already approved it for sale.
